DIY Easter Oval Jar Centerpiece

Happy National Fragrance Day!

Let’s talk fragrance. It’s no secret that we absolutely love fragrance. In fact, we love it so much that we wanted to share the experience of choosing fragrances with you. At the Charleston, SC Flagship, we have two special “fragrance rooms”  where we burn test new fragrances and ask for YOUR feedback.  If you visit the store today and fill out the ipad apps in each room, we’ll take 10% off your purchase. Sounds like fun right?

So, to help make you a fragrance expert, we should discuss fragrance characteristics. Fragrances are characterized into top, middle and bottom notes. The top notes are usually the freshest and lightest notes in a fragrance. These are the notes you smell first. The middle notes are strong, lasting and emerge shortly after the top notes first impression. The bottom notes are the rich, heavy scents that emerge slowly and give the fragrance staying power. Enjoy National Fragrance Day & fill your home with your favorite Colonial Candle scent!

Ready for more new arrivals? Each season we introduce a new destination collection & this spring we are packing our bags for Bora Bora. Just imagine… overwater bungalows, crystal clear blue water, and sunshine, lots of sunshine! What could be better? We are traveling, by way of fragrance, to this exotic Tahitian destination with four beachy scents:

  • Coconut Milk & Lime: A tantalizing Polynesian fusion of shaved coconut with milk, invigorating lime and bergamot, soothed by white amber and shea
  • Coral & White Sands: A barefoot stroll on Tahitian white sands with sea salt and pomegranate flower, while beachwood and coral musk create a warm presence
  • Monoi Pearl: Inspired by the indigenous pearls of Tahiti, this scent is a warm and intriguing blend of pearlescent musk, ylang ylang and smooth peach
  • Orchid & Violet: A light dusting of pink sugar welcomes the sweet smell of Bora Bora’s first blooms with plum, sweet honeysuckle and cotton flower

Support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation

Join us in supporting a wonderful foundation fighting childhood cancer, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. The foundation was founded by a very brave and selfless little girl named Alexandra “Alex” Scott who was diagnosed with childhood cancer shortly before her first birthday. At the age of four, Alex decided to have a lemonade stand to raise money for doctors to “help other kids, like they helped me.”  At her first lemonade stand, Alex and her family raised $2,000 for her local hospital.

While bravely fighting her own battle with cancer, she continued to hold yearly lemonade stands in her front yard. Word spread about the remarkable child helping other sick children, and people from across the world started hosting their own lemonade stands and donating proceeds to the cause. In August of 2004, Alex passed away at age 8, knowing that she had helped raise over $1 million to find a cure for childhood cancer.  Today, her legacy continues with the help of her family and supporters through the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Shannon’s Trip to Nepal

It’s no secret around here that we’ve got the travel bug. With the release of our new destination collections, we spend countless hours daydreaming about the beautiful places in the world we would like to cross off of our travel bucket lists. Recently, Shannon, our graphic designer and photographer, had the amazing opportunity to spend ten days in Nepal.  Shannon is truly talented and has taken all of the St. Barths and Cape Cod photography that we have been using, so we knew she would have some great photos from her trip. She was kind enough to share her photos and tell us a little about her adventure.

Women harvesting wheat and preparing for monsoon season in the mountains just outside the city

Man gives an offering of candles to Buddha at the Swayambhunath Monkey Temple

What was the most memorable part of your trip?

“I made plenty of new friends while I was in Nepal. I had tea with a Lama (a monk teacher) and had a 2-hour conversation about religion. I got a “blessing” and a hug from a Shaiva Sadhu (a holy man considered to be a living god), saw Mt. Everest, wore a sari, and even fed a wild monkey one of my granola bars. I spent some time at a school and got to hang out with the kids, which was a lot of fun. On the last day, they dressed up and performed a few traditional Nepalese dances. The whole trip was memorable!”

What did you learn while you were there?

“I have picked up a new appreciation for reliable electricity, drinkable running water, and peace and quiet. I have also learned a lot about Hinduism and Buddhism, the two most common religions in Nepal.”

How would you describe the culture in Nepal?

“Friendly, relaxed, and easygoing. You can walk up to anyone on the street and have a conversation like old friends or take them out for tea. In America, people generally focus on their schedule and their families; in Nepal, people are pretty open for anything as long as you’re friendly.”

Do you have any advice for anyone planning to travel to Nepal?

“Make sure you know the conversion rate and the average price of things before you buy any souvenirs… they will try to overcharge you. Don’t be afraid to barter! You can usually get things for more than 50% less than the asking price.”

If you could describe your trip in 3 words,  what would they be?

“Fun, beautiful (people, landscape, architecture, & religion), and inspiring”

Cape Cod Roots

With the recent release of our Cape Cod Collection, it seemed only right to take a stroll down memory lane. After all, the 4 C’s in our logo stand for “Colonial Candle of Cape Cod.” Founded in Hyannis, Massachusetts by Mabel Baker in 1909, Colonial Candle was the first U.S. candle company started by a woman.

Mable Baker

Mabel knew that the pilgrims had made candles from native bayberries growing nearby, so she began the laborous process of boiling, skimming and straining the bayberries. Each bushel of berries yielded only 2 kg of wax. She handbraided cotton wicks and lovingly hand dipped each taper candle as much as 35 to 50 times to create special Christmas gifts for her friends and family. The candles became so popular that she began selling them in her husband’s hardware store. By 1909, many stores on Cape Cod were selling Mabel’s candles.

We’ve come a long way since then, but it’s still important to us to pay tribute to the rich heritage of Colonial Candle. Our new Cape Cod Collection consists of 4 fragrances: Salt Water Taffy, Peach Cobbler, Old Fashioned Lemonade and Line Dried Linen. Exactly how we imagine summers on the Cape!

Featured Retailer: Sincerely Yours

The team at Sincerely Yours of Santa Rosa, California has posed an interesting question to their Colonial Candle customers. How do you choose your candles? Is it by fragrance first and then color? Or is it by color then fragrance? Which is more important?

To help answer these questions, Pamela of Sincerely Yours put a survey at her checkout stand and has asked her staff to ask every customer purchasing Colonial Candle how they selected their candles, by color or by fragrance. Pamela says it’s been fun and led to very interesting discussions. Customers are even going back to the display and adding a candle because they realize they need a special color for a certain room or event. So far, the results have gone both ways at Sincerely Yours. If you are in the Santa Rosa, CA area stop by Sincerely Yours at 2324 Magowan Drive and participate in their survey.

What do you think? When shopping for a Colonial Candle, do you choose by color or by fragrance? Comment below!

St. Barths Color Story

How important is color to a candle? Well, not only does the fragrance have to be one of a kind but the colors must be on trend and capture the feeling of the fragrance. For the St. Barths Collection, we have 4  fabulously tropical fragrances that let you envision touching the crystal clear topaz waters, smelling the sweet aromas of cocoa plum and coral hibiscus, and even sipping on a melon mojito by the pool if you so desire. In addition to the fragrances, it is the bright and vibrant colors that complete the island vibe. To achieve the St. Barths feel with our unscented classic wax candles, we recommend the following color palette:

Powdered Sugar (to sprinkle on top)

Method: Beat the yogurt, butter and eggs in a bowl. Add the lemon juice and 1/2 the lemon zest. Stir in slowly to prevent curdling. Add the flour and sugar, stir slowly. Preheat a non-stick pan. 1/4 cup Chopped Fresh Cilantro

Method: In a large bowl, combine vinaigrette, beans, cumin, salt and pepper to taste, set aside. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add corn and pan-roast, stirring occasionally until lightly browned, about 4 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Stir corn and remaining ingredients into black bean mixture and toss together. Chill until ready to serve. Divide evenly into four salad bowls. Makes four servings. Tip: If you use frozen corn kernels, make sure they’re thawed and dry so they don’t stick to the pan.
